As we approach our annual Lean into Jesus Ministry conference Trust God coming up February 2nd, I am reminded of the old hymn “Trust and Obey” written by John H. Sammis in 1887. The meaning of this hymn is fairly self-explanatory as Sammis illustrates the rewards of trusting God’s word and obeying God’s will.

Maybe you remember the lyrics of this 132-year-old song …

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory He sheds on our way!

While we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil He doth richly repay;

Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown nor a cross, but is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove the delights of His love until all on the altar we lay;

for the favor He shows, for the joy he bestows, are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way;

What He says we will do, where He sends we will go; never fear, only trust and obey.

The Story Behind Trust and Obey

This beautiful hymn got its start by someone who heard a man at a revival saying “I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.” It was then simply written down and handed to the eventual songwriter John Sammis.

I want to urge you to attend our conference this year. It will be another amazing time of spiritual encouragement.  I had a 15-year-old girl tell me she couldn’t wait to come again this year.  She began following one of our speakers from last year on social media and continues to be encouraged.  Join us on February 2nd at the Guntersville Town Hall and let God lift your spirit and revive your soul. May we all take the opportunity to Trust God as our conference name suggests.
