When you hear the word, trust what feelings tend to arise in your mind? Are they feelings of fear, hurt, uncertainty, or are you able to feel peace, comfort, and calm? I believe that the way that we perceive this word has a lot to do with how we live our daily lives.

The definition of trust is a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. As I reflect on the meaning, I am reminded of how hard it is to trust. As a matter of fact, I struggle to trust. When I think about the very act of fully trusting, a swarm of emotions comes to my mind, and I am left with the “what-ifs.” What if it doesn’t work out? What if I get hurt? What if I fail? What if they betray me? What if they let me down?

Wow! What an exhausting process! You see, when I put my trust in the ability of myself or others, I lose perspective. Psalm 62:8 instructs us: “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.” Trust in Him! Do not place your trust in what is fallible. Placing your trust in people or things will only disappoint you.

The Psalmist writes of the trustworthiness of God because he has known the faithfulness that has been displayed by the mighty hand of the Lord. He had the right perspective! We can trust God’s plan for our lives, even when it seems extremely difficult. When we get the news that devastates, we can trust Him. When we are overcome by the fear of the future, we can trust Him. When we face one crushing disappointment after another, we can trust Him.

Our God is in the details, and He is working for us even when we cannot see. If you are struggling to trust, ask God to help you to see that He is worthy of trust. He made you, He knows you, and He loves you!

“We wait for the LORD; He is our help and shield. For our hearts rejoice in Him because we trust in His holy name. May your faithful love rest on us, LORD, for we put our hope in you.” Psalm 33:20-22
