Relentless Pursuit

I can never escape from your Spirit!

    I can never get away from your presence!

 If I go up to heaven, you are there;

    if I go down to the grave, you are there.

 If I ride the wings of the morning,

    if I dwell by the farthest oceans,

 even there your hand will guide me,

    and your strength will support me.

 I could ask the darkness to hide me

    and the light around me to become night—

     but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.

To you the night shines as bright as day.

    Darkness and light are the same to you.

Psalm 139:7-12

Sometimes the basic knowledge of God’s character leaves me completely overwhelmed. I can’t tell you how many times I have read this passage of scripture or sung it in a song, yet tonight it touches a special place in my heart. According to David, we can’t escape His presence! No matter where we go or how many times we try to run away, He’s still there. His extravagant love leads to a relentless pursuit of our hearts.

David was chosen by God to be the King of Israel. God pursued Him from the very beginning. He called him, equipped him, and empowered him. Some of the most beautiful passages of scripture are psalms that David wrote praising God and thanking God for never leaving him. David’s reign as King was anything but perfect, yet God was still there, pursuing. When his enemies chased him, God was there. When he felt all alone, God was there. When he had an affair, and had his best friend murdered, God was there. When he hurt, God was there.

I don’t know how you couldn’t be overwhelmed by that truth. God has called, equipped, and empowered each of us to do good works for Him and I guarantee that no one reading this has been perfect in their calling. Surely there have been failures along the way. Surely there have been times when you messed up so bad you thought for sure God had given up on you. Surely there have been moments when you felt completely alone, but the truth is that through it all He never stopped pursuing you.

Even in our wonderings and shortcomings God loves us enough to continually chase after us. I’m so thankful that we can’t outrun His love.
