I don’t know about you, but I must have whispered hundreds of wishes as a child. Dandelions were abundant on our family farm. The small white puffs dotted the rich green grass, inviting me to bend down, pluck one, and blow with all my might. I carefully made my wish, watching as the tiny seedlings drifted away on the warm summer breeze.
My childhood wishes consisted of the things little girls fancy -such as strawberry cake, a pony, finding my prince, …maybe that my freckles would go away, or it would not rain on Saturday. Some of those wishes came true. Mom’s strawberry cake delighted the family on many occasions. We did get a pony, and the love of my life is my perfect prince.
Of course, my heart’s desires have changed over the course of over a half-century of life. The expression of those desires also changed. Somewhere along the way, I realized that wishes amount to little more than the breath it takes to whisper them. My heart’s desires now are presented in prayer to the One who hears, sees, understands, and answers. No need for wishes; my trust is in Jesus Christ.
What a joy it is to pray for those I love. It is an honor to pray for others that I may or may not know, souls who are desperate for a touch from God. How marvelous to know that God is near. He hears the prayers of our hearts as we struggle to grasp the evil that permeates society. I find my prayer list growing ever longer as the difficulties of life attempt to devour all peace. It is comforting that my Lord holds those I love, and me, in His strong and righteous hand.
The closer I draw to God, the more I find that my delight is in Him. Subsequently, the desires of my heart should line up with the desires of His heart.
If I were to make a wish today, it would be that I would become so close to Jesus that my every desire would be in perfect sync with Him. It is my prayer for you as well!
Focus on Jesus.
Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
