Only four words into the second worship song, my eyes could not contain the flood building quickly in them. Hot tears made their way down my cheeks. Completely overcome with gratitude and joy, I focused on the lyrics and worshipped God.

“I love You, Lord; Oh, Your mercy never fails me. All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands.

From the moment that I wake up, Until I lay my head, Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.

All my life You have been faithful. All my life You have been so so good.
With every breath that I am able, Oh I will sing of the goodness of God.

I love Your voice. You have led me through the fire. In the darkest night, You are close like no other
I’ve known You as a Father, I’ve known You as a friend. I have lived in the goodness of God…”

Excerpt from “The Goodness of God”

Ben Fielding, Jenn Johnson.

This song never fails to speak to my heart. Three worship services in separate venues in the last few weeks included it. I soaked up the beautiful lyrics and lifted praise each time.

The deep green hues of summer are beginning to fade and give way to what will become the brilliant red, yellow, and orange foliage of autumn. Nearing the completion of my sixty-fifth trip around the sun, I see the continuation of changing seasons in my life, too. That could be discouraging, but not when I remember how His mercies never fail me.

As I consider the perfect sacrifice He made for imperfect me, I must declare His faithfulness.

When I gaze into the faces of my precious children and grandchildren, my heart races with gratitude. Indeed, He has been so, so good.

I hear His voice and feel His presence when concern over my aging parents’ health threatens to overwhelm me. Through the ups and downs that come with passing years, I can testify that He is close like no other.

God’s faithfulness, mercy, and goodness are beyond compare. The Creator of all things lovingly and tenderly holds us through every season and every life experience.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV

“…your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” Psalm 139:10 ESV

When I sing, “I love you, Lord,” I mean it. With every breath that I am able…

“Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.”
