“Therefore if the Son sets you free, you will be free.”
John 8:36
I knew a girl who was a prisoner. She didn’t wear visible chains or have on prisoner’s garments, but she was serving a sentence. She lived under the rule of her decisions. She never felt free, no matter the work that she did. She always was seeking to find an escape, but usually just became more tangled in the weight of her bondage. As she would plead with her captor to release her, he would only remind her of how worthless and awful she was and that she would never be free.
You see I was that girl and that prison was my sin. Then one day I met a Rescuer. When He found me, I was bruised, downcast, and broken. He heard my cry for mercy and stepped in to remove my chains. He held my hand and lifted up my head. He delivered me, He restored my life and healed my wounds. Without Him paying my debt and setting me free, I would have been a slave to my sin forever. I could never have rescued myself. It was only by His sacrifice that I can claim the victory of freedom!
Many of you that are reading this are like the girl that I used to be. You see the weight of the sin that holds you down is keeping you from the freedom that comes in Christ. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we are in chains, because we have become so numb to wearing them. Are you locked in addiction, overcome by fear, stuck in failure, depending on someone or something other than Jesus to make you feel better? No matter how you try, you will never find the freedom you desire until you grab hold of the Merciful Savior and never let go of His loving hand.
Don’t believe the lie that “you can never be free”! There is no sin so great that will turn Him away from extending His forgiveness to you. Jesus is waiting to release you, all you have to do is ask!
“Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus, because the Spirit’s law of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2
