“Current Situation” social media posts have been known to run the gamut of human experience. The inevitable attached photo might portray toes in beach sand, cuddles with a sweet baby, a hilarious photo of silly friends, or even chaotic scenery after a storm. Unfortunately, most people are all too familiar with the uncomfortable quandary of an unpleasant “current situation.”
“When the servant of the man of God got up early and went out, he discovered an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?” 2 Kings 6:15 HCSB
Elisha’s servant, Gehazi, caught a glimpse of what looked to become a nasty predicament.
Oh yes, I see you, Gehazi! I understand! Often, I find myself smack in the middle of what appears to be overwhelming challenges. I, too, have asked, “What are we to do?”
“Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.” 2 Kings 6:16 HCSB
Conditions in life have a way of moving us either or a place of fear or to deepened faith. Elisha began his answer to Gehazi with a straightforward statement. “Don’t be afraid.”
Okay, not afraid. Check. Wait …seriously? I can see Gehazi struggling a bit with that. “Elisha, did you happen to notice the army surrounding us?”
Then, Elisha shared something that may have seemed even more bizarre to Gehazi than the advice not to be afraid, “those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.”
Say what? “One, two. There are two of us. Umm… And hey, I don’t even know how many of them!”
“Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the Lord opened the servant’s eyes. He looked and saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:17 HCSB
Ah! Now, that’s better! How we love to “see” our deliverance! Elisha prayed, and God opened Gehazi’s eyes to see His provision! Gehazi’s perception of his current situation just changed! Horses and chariots of fire covered the mountain. Of course, Elisha was correct, “those with us outnumber those who are with them!”
Have you looked at your “current situation” and felt your very soul cry out, “Oh my, what are we to do?” I certainly have been there many times, overwhelmed by circumstances. We find ourselves blinded to the truth of God’s constant presence and protection. So, what do we do? Seek God in prayer.
Your “current situation” may not feel ideal. Just as God was with Elisha and Gehazi, rest assured He is with you. God sees your concern, and He hears your prayers. There is no need to fear, only to pray that He will allow you to see the power of His army surrounding you.
Open my eyes, Lord, that I may see clearly. Allow me to recognize your presence in every situation, trust You through tough circumstances, and depend on You to meet the challenges of the day.
