Cade’s Grace, My Mistake…..
Last week I made a mistake on an early morning haircut appointment. I usually cut Cade’s hair before school as he has a schedule that allows it. I almost always book him at 7:00 or 7:30 in the mornings. But NO, this time I booked him at 8:00 and text his mom 7:00… OOPS! I made a mistake.
It wasn’t my first one in 34 years, but I can count on one hand the number of people that it has happened to. He called me about 7:20 and asked if he was there at the right time. I was on my way taking the kids to school and told him I could be right there. His grace allowed me to catch my breath and meet him there at 8:00. I extended a complimentary haircut and thanked him for his grace.
Not every situation ends in grace. About 1990 I did the exact same thing and I never cut the clients hair again. The definition of grace is: “the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God. The influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them. A virtue or excellence of divine origin.”
I often tell my children that situations are not what has happened but how you react to them. Our lesson in church on Sunday was hand in hand with what I felt led to write about. In Micah 6:6-8 we are called to act justly, live kindly and to walk humbly with our God. Grace is easy to understand but hard to put in practice. I reached out to my friends to ask them which scriptures spoke grace to them. This is what they gave me:
2 Corinthians 12:8-9 “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…”
Psalms 34:19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”
Romans 5:20 “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,”
My prayer for today is that I can be more like Cade. His integrity (being who you are regardless of who is watching), his grace and his humble walk with God is truly an example for others to see.
