I recently found myself emotionally “undone” by the chorus of a song during Sunday morning worship. The song was quite familiar, one I loved the very first time I heard it.

The subject was certainly not a new concept to me, but the amazing truth of the lyrics overwhelmed me that morning. The reality that The Lord our God is preparing a place or room if you will, for me at “His house,” was almost more than I could take in.  God’s amazing love flooded every fiber of my being like ocean waves crashing against a rocky shore.

 “In my Father’s house
There’s a place for me,
I’m a child of God,
Yes, I am!”   (Who You Say I Am by Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan, chorus 2)

In the week that followed, the Holy Spirit continued to take me back to the lyrics.  The easy rhythm and sweet words seemed to play in the background of my daily activities softly.  The words danced through my mind and across the tender terrain of my heart: “…in my Father’s house, there’s a place for me…”

If you are a parent, I suspect you remember preparing a room for your baby.  With great anticipation and attention to every detail, parents-to-be lovingly collect all the items they think their baby will need.   Beds and blankets are chosen. Baby clothes are laundered and carefully placed in the babies’ closet or chest.  Diapers, baby wash, lotion… you name it, everything is ready for the baby’s arrival.  The preparation is ripe with joyful expectation, but nothing compares to the thrill of the homecoming!

Home.  A place where we are part of a family.  The place where we are completely accepted.  A place of unconditional love.  I have enjoyed the blessing of two safe, loving homes.  One with my parents and one with my husband.  I realize that might be rare; I am eternally thankful for that gift.  Home is a haven from all that the world hurls at me in day-to-day life.

Can you fathom that the Creator of the universe is preparing a place for you?  He is getting your room ready for your homecoming. He accepts you and loves you with everlasting, unconditional love.  Our heavenly Daddy has everything that we need ready for us.  He and all the hosts of heaven will be overjoyed to welcome us home.  Jesus told us:

“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”    John 14:2-3 ESV

Jesus is coming again to take us home.  We will dwell with God in His house.  He has made a special place for each of his children. He is getting everything ready to welcome us home.

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.  He will dwell with them and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”   Revelation 21:2-3 ESV

“He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come Lord Jesus!”  Revelation 22:20

Meditate on this beautiful truth.  Take some time to let it sink in.  You have a forever home, with a forever family, in a forever place:  heaven. Your room will be ready for you!
