Have you ever paused to consider how people might remember your journey on this side of heaven? What lasting impact do you hope your faith and life choices will leave?
Recently, I attended three Celebrations of Life, each unique but all honoring faithful women whose deep love for Jesus was evident. Remembering their lives prompted me to reflect on my own faith legacy. Of course, Jesus is our ideal example of walking with God; He modeled perfect fellowship with God every day of His life. Additionally, two Old Testament figures (Enoch and Noah) came to mind. Their close relationships with God were evident in how they lived.
Enoch
Scripture tells us that Enoch walked with God and God was pleased with him:
“Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.” –Genesis 5:24
“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.” –Hebrews 11:5
Though we know little of Enoch, even the meaning of his name, ‘dedicated,’ stirs the heart. His walk with God stands as a testimony and invitation to pursue unwavering dedication. He is remembered as a model of faith and righteousness, one of only two to be taken to heaven without tasting death.
Because Scripture notes that Enoch pleased God, his intimacy with the Lord inspires me to pray for a heart attuned to God’s presence. I long for faith that fully trusts Him and to live each day ready to meet Him face to face.
Noah
“…Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.” –Genesis 6:9b
“By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” –Hebrews 11:7
Noah lived amid violence and corruption, yet Scripture tells us of his righteousness. In faith, he yielded his will to God and followed divine instructions for the Ark. His obedience invites us to trust and follow God’s leading, even when details are beyond our understanding.
Noah responded in trust and immediate obedience—evidence of a faith worth emulating. His life teaches that true obedience flows from confident trust in God, regardless of the world’s opinions. Lord, help us to be faithful!
Inspired
Looking at both examples, to be remembered as one who ‘walked with God’ is a lasting legacy. Enoch and Noah’s lives show that it pleases God when His children walk with Him.
Walking with God is not just an outward action, but an inward pursuit. It is longing for His nearness, seeking His heart in prayer and worship, and learning His ways with a surrendered spirit. As Enoch and Noah did, I can enjoy intimacy with God each day and rejoice in His loving presence.
As we consider these examples, we are blessed that through Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells within us, guiding and comforting us at every moment. What a blessing to have the Lord’s presence within us at all times. Imagine the longing of those before us for such companionship—what a gift we have!
Even so, I confess there have been seasons when I wandered from close fellowship with God. My heart drifted, but God’s faithfulness never failed. In His mercy, He lovingly convicts, forgives, and restores—each time we repent and return. Praise the Lord for such mercy and grace.
The Heart of the Matter
Enoch and Noah modeled undeniable faith, surrender, and obedience as they walked with God. Their stories remind me that a life well lived is measured by our faithfulness and daily walk with God. My prayer is that my life reflects His love and I always walk in step with Him.
