All week I have been looking forward to the upcoming long weekend. Having an extra day off of work and knowing that the weather is going to be beautiful has encouraged me greatly. But, as I’ve had some time today to reflect on the real reason we are celebrating this weekend I can feel God speaking to my heart about the true meaning of sacrifice.

As a single 34 year old I sometimes find myself struggling with selfishness. I think my current station in life just lends itself to a way of thinking that only involves myself. I can watch what I want on tv and eat what I want for dinner. I can come home when I want and go out when I want . I can spend my money on what I want and spend my time with whom I want . If I’m not careful I can find myself completely consumed with . . . myself.

On Memorial Day we remember those men and women who have lost their lives while serving in the armed forces. Such a sobering reality as I look at the small sacrifices I am asked to make each day. Our men and women in the armed forces willingly lay their lives down to protect our freedom.

Jesus told the disciples in John 15:12-13 ” This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” The disciples still didn’t understand exactly what that meant yet, but soon, Jesus would be the one to provide the ultimate sacrifice by laying down His life for His friends.

I love that we serve a God who led by example! Jesus showed us how to live by his own life. Not all of us are called into serving in the armed forces, but all of us are called to love each other and sacrifice ourselves for the good of others.

As women who love the Lord, we have to fight against our “me” centered culture and earn to embrace a life that instead leads to sacrifice. I am so thankful to be a part of Lean Into Jesus Ministries and be witness to women who are living this out. True ministry can not be selfish. You have to be willing to lay down your own wants and desires to chase after God’s heart and His desires. I’m praying that as I celebrate this Memorial Day weekend that God would continue to cultivate my young heart into one that longs to sacrifice and one that longs to be just like my Father.
