“And the angels cry holy
All creation cries holy
You are lifted high, holy
Holy forever”“Holy Forever” by Chris Tomlin
Holy. How do we comprehend the unfathomable holiness of God? Try as we may, it’s more than our mortal minds can grasp. Indeed, God is all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, and everywhere. He is sovereign, infinite, and perfect. He is perfectly holy.
“There is none holy like the Lord for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2
Holy One
There are many different names used to refer to God in the Bible. Each name’s meaning helps us understand God’s nature and attributes. Every characteristic of God is worthy of worship and praise, but one that immediately brings me to my knees is the “Holy One.”
I find myself completely undone as I approach our Holy Triune God in worship. He deserves so much more than I can give. Yet, He lovingly draws me near.
Worship
How about you? How does the truth of God’s holiness affect your worship? Do you pause to consider to whom you sing? Is worship ritual and tradition or deep cries of a heart that sees our perfect Creator God and can not comprehend how He could die for her?
The heart of worship is celebrating and acknowledging the holiness of God. Our thoughts center on Him alone. It’s not about us; it’s about our Lord.
Music
I love that music helps me prepare for worship. Often, worship songs beautifully express what my heart can’t articulate.
It doesn’t take a lot of fancy words. The seraphim abide in His presence, yet, Isaiah recorded they could only utter:
…“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Isaiah 6:3
When something in the Bible is repeated, the reader should take particular notice. When it is said three times, it is superlative. The holiness of God is the holiest of all; there is no one or nothing as sacred as He. In Revelation, John witnessed the heavenly declaration of the holiness of God:
“And the four living creatures, …day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Revelation 4:8
How do you show adoration for the Holy One? He loves you. He died for you, rose from the dead, and is preparing a place for you in eternity. How can we mindlessly go through rituals and traditions and miss the sweetness found in worship at the feet of our Savior?
The song “Holy Forever” blesses my heart whenever I hear it. Click the link below and listen closely to the lyrics. Join the chorus of the redeemed as we lift praise to the Holy One:
“Hear your people sing, holy
To the King of kings, holy
You will always be holy
Holy forever”“Holy Forever” Chris Tomlin
