In Mark 4:35-41, we read of the power that is displayed over the surrounding elements when Jesus calms the storm. Jesus joined His disciples in the boat as they made their way to the other shore. The boat became caught up in the waves and wind of the storm. As the disciples begin to panic, they noticed that Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern of the boat. They were distraught; He was peacefully sleeping.

The Disciples were afraid. They decided to wake Him up. “Teacher, aren’t you afraid we are going to die?” they asked. Their fear had overwhelmed them and caused them to focus on the storm. I mean, how could they not focus on the storm; they were right in the middle of it? I know I am guilty of doing the same, focusing on my problems instead of the One who can calm my storm. Fear distracted them, just as it tends to distract us. But do you know that you can refocus your mind and choose to rest in Jesus?

In the midst of the storm, Jesus stood up and spoke to the wind and the waves. He said, “Peace, be still!” Just like that, the storm stopped, and there was a great calm. Wow! Could you imagine being present for that miracle? Wait a minute.  Maybe we have witnessed moments like that, too! Have you ever had peace during a significant loss? Have you experienced unexplainable peace when you walked through a debilitating disease and knew that in every bit of pain and suffering, you are not alone?

You see, I have been in many “boats” in this lifetime. I have been caught amongst the waves and tossed about at sea. When Jesus chooses to calm the storm, all He has to say is, “Be still!” But what if it is in the moments of the tumultuous times that we see where our hope lies. Let me remind you, as Jesus told those that were with Him in the boat, “Why are you fearful? Do you not have faith?” (Mark 4:40)

Through every storm in this life, we can trust Jesus! He is always in control! He can speak to any storm and calm it. What if He is allowing the storms for our good, then what? Would you choose this day to rest in Him and trust His plan?

I want you to know that the storm we are currently enduring is no surprise to Him! In Romans 8:28, scripture tells us, “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” Let the truth of that scripture sink into your heart and combat the fear that overwhelms you. Please rest in knowing that God is FAITHFUL!! He always has been and always will be. No matter the mountain or the storm that you might face, remember you are not alone!
