“Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.” Hebrews 12:1-2
In a marathon a group of individuals gather at the starting line to compete in a grueling 26.2 mile run. Many of the participants understand the task that they are about to embark on and have prepared their selves physically for what they will endure. The runners have been training for months, purchased the right gear, studied the course, and have physically prepared to run.
Our Christian walk here in this life is very comparable to a marathon. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-25, Paul says “Don’t you know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way to win the prize. Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. However, they do it to receive a crown that will fade away, but we a crown that will never fade away.” Paul is laying out what our spiritual purpose is here on this earth, to run the race for Jesus!
If we are to be ”runners for Christ” we must train, dress the part, know the course, set goals, and most importantly finish the race!
You might ask “How do I train for life as a Christian?” Well in my opinion the Bible clearly says “we are to keep our eyes on Jesus!” In order to do that, we must study God’s word and be in constant communication through prayer. That way we can know what He requires of us and He trains us in our purpose for Him.
“How can we dress the part?”
I know that being a follower of Christ is one of the most difficult assignments, but in order to look like Him, we must put on His character traits. Humility, kindness, mercy, self-control, and love are just a few that reflect Him. This is easy to say and much harder to practice, but with God’s help it can be accomplished.
“You must know the course.”
You can’t run a race into the unknown and finish without having a destination. We run knowing that the finish line is the prize of heaven and eternal life. We cannot focus on the things of this world and its distractions or we will lose sight of what is important!
“Don’t burnout to early!”
If you try to run a race too fast you will lose all energy to compete and totally give up. The same goes for our spiritual race. If you try to do everything for God, instead of heeding His instructions on rest and letting Him lead the way, you will burnout too soon. The result will be ineffective and lukewarm. In order to be a passionate and effective servant you must pace yourself in ministry and do His will alone. Do not try to be a super hero. NEWSFLASH: Jesus is the only Hero the world needs! Serve in such a way that shows spiritual discipline and godly discernment.
“Encourage yourself and FINISH!!!”
Yes, it is going to be extremely difficult. Yes, you will hit a wall from time to time, but I promise it will all be worth it one amazing day when you kneel at the feet of Jesus and hear “Well done, my good and faithful servant”.
