To totally depend on God is a life of following even when you cannot see the outcome. I have truly realized this year that no matter what we imagine or plan for, we do not have the ability to will something into motion.

As I reflected on what God led me to write, I heard the gentle whisper in my spirit of the words “total dependence.”  I asked myself what that would look like when I tried to explain it on paper. As hard as it is to convey, I have come up with these thoughts:

  • Total dependence is to know that salvation is in Him (JESUS) alone.

“For it is by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves: it is God’s gift not from works so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“There is salvation in no one else for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which they must be saved.” Acts 4:12

  • Total dependence is to trust in God’s ability to provide for my every need.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be provided for you.” Matthew 6:33

  • Total dependence is to believe that He is enough.

“He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17

  • Total dependence is to acknowledge that apart from Him, you will not survive.

“The LORD will protect you from all harm; He will protect your life. The LORD will protect your coming and going both now and forever.” Psalm 121:7-8

  • Total dependence is to cling to the thought that He provides a way even in the most difficult times.

“Do not fear for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

When we totally depend on God, we let go of trying to control every situation, both spiritually and physically. If the God of creation can hold the universe in place, surely He can take care of the things that you and I face. He is active and present in our lives. Not a God that steps back and just watches us from afar.

I know that life has been overwhelming for most of us, and things seem out of control. But let us confess how much we need Him and rest in His power. When we do this, we will find no safer place to be. I pray that as each of us continues through this time of uncertainty, our awareness of God’s might will amaze us as we face each step in total dependence on Him.

Let us pray:

“Father God, as we have faced an overwhelming amount of obstacles this year, I know that you have not left us. God as hard as it has been, I am resting in the thought that You are working all things for good and for Your glory. Let me not focus on the things that I see in front of me, but let me look to You and Your power to hold all things together. Thank you for the gift of Salvation that comes through Christ. Help us to dwell in the knowledge that You are in control no matter what. AMEN.”
